What is a "Good Monkey Project"?
The Good Monkey Project is a problem solving global learning project (GLP) for students from TK through 3rd Grade. The students learn the value of $20 by collecting or donating $20 worth of items to a child in need. The teachers teach the students the value of a dollar by discussing the cost of each item included in the package. It’s an opportunity for the students to venture outside of their classroom walls and learn math, geography and writing. Why Join? Many children go hungry for days. Many more endure the cold or wet rain without an adequate roof over their heads. What if, we teach our students to do something small, but filled with love? What if can make one child’s heart sing with small things we can fit in a pillowcase? What is the value of this project? The Good Monkey Project allows students to be active participants in today’s global issues. The students learn to be problem solvers. By doing something small such as filling up a pillowcase with small things (pencils, notebooks, socks, small toys, shirt, fun sunglasses, and anything else that we think a child might enjoy for the next few weeks), students learn to be analytical and well grounded students. It’s a small thing we do on our end. We collect $20 worth of stuff, and stuff them in a pillowcase with a letter to a child receiving the package. Teacher Collaboration Teachers will share their work and experiences on this project on a common drive. Once you join the project, a link to the common drive will be emailed to you. In the common drive, teachers/participants will have access to: lesson plans, unit plans, and positive stories/experiences. Teachers will share the good things they experienced in their classroom about this project. So that others can have the good experience in their classrooms too. As the sharing of good experiences and good practices continue, we will be helping each other and our students as well. Teachers are welcome to share their modified lesson plans or even unit plans they’ve built around the good monkey project. This will enable teachers to get ideas from each other, and share their best practices. Once we start sharing successes we’ve experienced on the good monkey project (via the common drive and google slides) then we start feeling connected with each other and forming deeper connections and collaborations. |
